Day 1 Magic Millions National yearling sale – Average dips 5%

Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis has a winning record at the Magic Millions National yearling sale and he was back on the Gold Coast to buy a Fastnet Rock filly on Wednesday.

The New Zealander topped Day 1 with a $300,000 bid for the Fastnet Rock filly from Galileo mare Dragon’s Tail (Lot 1559).  Prior purchases for Ellis at the National yearling sale include NZ Group 1 winners Princess Coup and Tell a Tale.

Princess Coup, a $260,000 buy, returned to the National Sale as a broodmare prospect and sold for a Magic Millions record price of $3 million.  Her daughter by Redoute’s Choice will go under the hammer on Thursday.

Leading Kiwi trainer Graeme Rogerson spent $663,000on 7 yearlings including the second and equal third top sellers on the leader-board.

He went to $250,000 to secure Baramul Stud’s exceptionally bred Redoute’s Choice – Kylikwong colt.  He is a full brother to stakes winner Cantonese and Group placed Chateau Margaux – their dam was Group 1 placed in the 2004 VRC Oaks and she is a full sister to Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy.

Rogerson went to $180,000 to secure the highly admired I Am Invincible – Love in Spring colt from Yarraman Park.

Another yearling to sell for $180,000 was the Northern Meteor – Kiss ‘n Chase colt from Oakwood Farm.  Leading Queensland based bloodstock agent John Foote made the successful bid.

Trade on Day 1 of the yearling sale reached $4.99 million for the 132 lots that found new owners.  The average price dipped 5% to $37,811 and the clearance rate dropped 9 points to 65%.

Day 2 of the National yearling sale will commence at 10am on Thursday.
