Day 2 Keeneland September Sale – Bernardini filly bigger than Texas

A Bernardini half sister to 2008 Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell highlighted Day 2 of the Keeneland September yearling sale on Tuesday.

Catalogued as Lot 291, the filly made $1.30 million to the bid of Texas steel magnate Lane Seliger.  She was offered by Airdrie Stud owner Brereton C. Jones who bred and raced Proud Spell.

“The bloodline was very, very attractive, very deep, and I think it will be well-supported in the future,” Seliger said after signing the ticket for the Bernardini – Pacific Spell filly. “I think the price was a little higher than we wanted to spend, but we’re not disappointed.”

Tuesday’s auction saw 139 yearlings sell for $34.88 million at an average of $250,978.  The clearance rate was 74%.

BERNARDINI
The Darley shuttler’s $1.30 million session topper was the star turn among 4 lots that grossed $2.10 million.  His millionaire filly was purchased by Lane Seliger who entered the industry after selling Lake Steel Ltd in 2010.  The Amarillo based owner of Baumann Stables has built up a broodmare band that he boards at the Yoshida family’s Winchester Farm in Lexington.

CONGRATS
The Vinery shuttler had a colt sell for $220K on Day 1 and he backed that up with a $180K filly on Tuesday.  The latter was listed as Lot 404 from the Three Chimneys consignment.  She is a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Fatal Bullet (Red Bullet) and was purchased by English agent David Redvers.

HARD SPUN
Top price among his 5 lots that totalled $632K was the Lane’s End colt (Lot 416) that made $300K.  He is the first foal from Seared (Gone West), an unraced daughter of G2 Hollywood Oaks winner Kumari Continent (Kris S.).

HENRYTHENAVIGATOR
Coolmore sire had a one-off colt from Ruff (Clever Trick) that made $100K.  Catalogued from Valkyre Stud (Lot 389), he was bought by Robert Spiegel and is a half-brother to Santa Anita G3 winner Mr Gruff (Mr. Greeley).

MEDAGLIA D’ORO
Darley shuttler topped Day 1 with a $1.50 million filly and he was back with a 4 lots that aggregated $795K.  Top-price on Day 2 was a $385K colt from Stonestreet Thoroughbreds.  Catalogued as Lot 386, he is the second foal of Royale Michele (Elusive Quality), a G2 winner of the Barbara Fritchie Stakes at laurel.

MORE THAN READY
Vinery champion reached turnover of $1.06 million for 7 lots.  Topping the list was a $310K filly from Denali Stud as agent for Craig and Holly Bandoroff.  Catalogued as Lot 251, she is from Irish bred mare Mrs Kipling (Exceed And Excel) who won races in England, Italy and the USA.

STREET CRY
Two lots by the Darley champion made a total of $1,025,000.  His Juddmonte bred colt catalogued as Lot 235 from Modification (Vindication) made $725K.  The dam was G1 placed at Churchill Downs and is from a half-sister to stakes winners Sky Alliance (Sky Classic), Classic Alliance (Sky Classic) and Prime Ruler (Orientate).
