The demand for quality mares continued at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on Thursday and there were late fireworks when Leone Chiara changed hands for $800,000.
A stakes winning daughter of Lion Hunter, Leone Chiara is these days best known as the dam of star Group 1 winning sire Star Witness. She was offered as the final lot of the day by Almavale Bloodstock in foal to Sepoy and topped the session when Danny O’Brien had the last say via a phone bid.
“Danny has trained so much of the family,” Magic Millions managing director Vix Cox said. “He had great success with Star Witness as well as Leone Chiara and Ferocity.”
Group 1 producer Disguise and Group 2 winner Majestic Music were next best on the leader-board at $750,000.
Disguise, the dam of recently retired Group 1 winner Appearance, was purchased from the draft of Kulani Park by Kitchwin Hills. “She’s a lovely mare in foal to Fastnet Rock,” Kitchwin Hill’s Mick Malone said. “We are a commercial and we feel that a mare like her could produce a stallion prospect.”
James Harron’s buying spree at the Gold Coast continued with his purchase of the former star racemare Majestic Music from the draft of Newgate Farm. “I am delighted to secure her,” Harron said. “She is a fantastic physical specimen in foal to Pierro. She will be in the system for a long time and she will probably visit Pierro again this year.”
Day 3 of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale will be held from 10am on Friday. Group winning mare Solar Charged is a late supplementary entry for the sale. She will be the last lot in the ring – presented by Vinery Stud on behalf of her own Peter Horwitz. The daughter of Charge Forward comes to the sale after being served by Sebring last spring.
