Champion sire Crafty Prospector died at Brookdale Farm in Kentucky last Saturday, March 27. He was 31 and had been in retirement since March 2007.
Crafty Prospector (Mr. Prospector – Real Crafty Lady by In Reality) sired 92 stakes winners, including Japanese champion Agnes Digital whose biggest win came in the 2001 Hong Kong Cup (G1).
Crafty Prospector also sired Crafty Shaw, a nine-time stakes winner, and graded stakes winners and current sires Crafty C. T. and Pies Prospect.
From 23 crops of racing age, Crafty Prospector sired 756 winners with earnings of $94.36 million. “He was by far the most consistent stallion to ever stand at Brookdale,” the stud’s owner Fred Seitz said. “And we stood Deputy Minister who could really get you the big horse.”
Crafty Prospector won 7 races and was stakes placed in the G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap in 1983. He is also a notable broodmare sire with his daughters producing the likes of English champion miler Intikhab and the G1 fillies Pampered Princess, Harmony Lodge and Downthedustyroad.
