Debut win for costly Encosta

Hoybell was the most expensive filly by champion sire Encosta de Lago sold in 2011 so it’s no surprise she kicked off her career with a debut win at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The Chris Waller trained filly was unfancied by punters in a race packed with well-bred contenders, but belied her long odds to produce an eye catching win.

Hoybell (3f Encosta de Lago – Satinka, by Stravinsky) sprinted home to score by a half length after well fancied runners Vaquera and Spurs and Sashes poured on the pace up front.   “She came from nowhere and weaved her way through the field,” Waller said.  “There’s plenty of improvement in her as she is still very green.  Next preparation she will be a really nice filly.”

Hoybell was a $690,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Ingham Racing from the draft of Willow Park Stud and is the first foal of former top class Kiwi filly Satinka, winner of the G2 Eight Carat Classic and Royal Stakes.

Waller would have had a keen interest in this filly when she arrived at his stables as her mother Satinka is a half-sister to the dam of his great stable favourite Rangirangdoo, a $2million earner with highlight wins in the G1 Doncaster Handicap and George Ryder Stakes.

Hoybell has provided a great result for her breeder John Madgwick giving Satinka a winner with her first foal and the Stravinsky mare is due to foal again this spring to Fastnet Rock, the mating replicating the cross that is responsible for four-time Group I winner Mosheen.
