Long Leaf sired his third first-crop winner in a week when Diamond Dancer scored an on-pace victory in the Keith Patten Memorial Maiden (1500m) at Ascot on Wednesday.
Trained Simon Miller also acknowledged Diamond Dancer might now have black-type options in the LR Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) on November 5 and G3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) on November 16.
“That was a stylish win second-up over 1500m,” Miller said. “She was my Karrakatta Plate filly last season but just couldn’t execute on the day. She has a long stride and a low heart-rate and there’s a good race in her whether it’s this prep or the next.”
Diamond Dancer was purchased for $130,000 from Greenfields Lodge at the 2023 Perth Magic Millions for a syndicate managed by Des Carvell and races in the same colours as millionaire sprinter-miler Valour Road (Frosted).
Long Leaf (Fastnet Rock) stands at Rangeview Stud and had sired Mai Aloha (York) and Hard Leaf (Port Lincoln) to maiden wins earlier in the week.
Diamond Dancer made it three and winning jockey Luke Campbell was always confident aboard the even-money favourite. “She was brave first-up at Belmont last month and it was a good run to finish second to God’s Gate,” he recalled.
“We drew a better gate today and I rode a positive race when she got away cleanly. She rolled along behind the leader and that gave us some cover from the headwind down the back.”
Diamond Dancer collared Frappuccino (Maschino) when they were five panels clear at the furlong and Campbell was content to let her cruise home by a couple of lengths from War Matters (War Chant).
She was bred and sold by Tony Patrizi from Greenfields Lodge in Capel. Her dam World Class (Manhattan Rain) is closely related to G1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) winner Miss Danehill (Danehill) and G2 VRC Craiglee Stakes (1600m) winner Pentastic (Pentire).
World Class was originally bought by Capel-based De Grey Park owner Dick Vincent for $30,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast before Patrizi weighed in with a successful offer in 2020.
She foaled Investmentstrategy (Playing God) for Vincent before changing and he claimed Listed victories in the Fairetha Stakes (1400m) and Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic (1400m) late last year. Her 2yo is an I’m All The Talk colt that cost Sarah Parnham $100,000 at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions.
Rangeview Stud stands Long Leaf for a $5,500 (inc GST) service fee. For bookings or more information, contact Robbie Gray on 0409 243 461.
