Duke of Marmalade tops Tatts Ireland Sale

Coolmore sire Duke of Marmalade took the honours on Day 1 of the Tattersalls Ireland’s September yearling sale at Fairyhouse Tuesday.

The only colt on offer by Danehill’s 2008 European champion made 70,000 euros to pin-hooker Willie Browne.  “He will be sent to a Breeze-up Sale next year,” Browne said.  “I’ve seen a few of the Duke of Marmalades and this is the nicest so far.”

The colt’s dam Literacy (Diesis) won four races in the USA and was G2 placed in the Long Island Hcp at Aqueduct.  Her first foal to race Jubilance (Oratorio) has won juveniles at Leicester and Kempton this year.

Bobby O’Ryan paid 50,000 euros for an Elnadim colt on behalf of Dermot Weld.  That price was matched by a Peintre Celebre colt bought by Ken Gundlach and Emma O’Gorman.  Pin-hooker Con Marnane was busy throughout and purchased 8 lots for 199,500 euros.

The Day 1 average of 11,515 euros was up 13% and the clearance rate improved three points to 85%.  The Sale concludes on Wednesday.
