Eagle swoops in Centenary Sprint

Hong Kong sprinter Eagle Regiment scored the biggest win of his career in the G1 Centenary Sprint Cup (1000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Eagle Regiment (4g El Moxie – Fire Lake by Bureaucracy) was positioned just off the speed for much of the race before responding to Olivier Doleuze in a thrilling renewal of the feature sprint.

“He is a 1000 metre specialist so we came here to try our best and see what happens,” trainer Manfred Man said.  “His rating was 106 coming out of handicaps and that’s a long way below Sacred Kingdom (127).

“We couldn’t be confident but the rain helped.  He handles soft ground and he’s very consistent at the distance.”

Doleuze said the classy sprinter deserved the success at G1 level.  “He’s a very nice horse and he has been really consistent over his career.  He’s a different horse over 1000m but now they will have to stretch him out.

“I don’t think that will be a problem but only the future will tell.  “He had to carry quite a bit of weight the last time he ran over 1200m.”

Eagle Regiment was bred and sold by Tracy Knotts at Sovereign Stud in WA.  He was sold for $100,000 at the 2009 Perth Magic Millions and was pin-hooked for $150,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions National HIT Sale by Man.

He is bred on the same El Moxie – Bureaucracy cross as Hong Kong’s world champion sprinter Silent Witness.

Eagle Regiment is a half-brother to WA Supremacy Stakes winner Royal Fire.  Their dam Fire Lake has a Viscount half-brother catalogued as Lot 92 for next month’s Perth Magic Millions.

The 2012 Perth Sale will be held at the Belmont Park from February 14.
