Vinery sire Husson added another string to his bow for the spring carnival when Husson Eagle trounced his rivals at Bendigo on Wednesday.
The Patrick Payne trained colt let down with a brilliant sprint in the straight to win by more than two lengths in the Bendigo Horse Of The Year Maiden (1100m).
Husson Eagle (3c Husson – Tie Me Up by Royal Academy) was racing first-up after an autumn campaign that included a close second to Bring Me The Maid in a stakes race at Flemington. “That was an easy kill – it’s always good to see them come back like that,” Payne said. “He tries hard and kept galloping right through the line today.”
There are several options ahead including the $250,000 MRC Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Wednesday, October 15.
“I rode a patient race and he put them away with an amazing turn of foot,” jockey Michael Rodd said. “He’s not overly big but looked fantastic in the yard.”
Husson Eagle was a $42,500 buy for Prime Thoroughbreds at the 2013 Adelaide Magic Millions and is from the family of G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Wonderful World.
Husson is also in the mix for the G2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington this Saturday with Queensland raider Looks Like The Cat.
The Tony Gollan trained chestnut can give Vinery sires a running double following the victory of Myboycharlie colt Charlie Boy twelve months ago.
Looks Like The Cat (3g By Husson – Fiery Dee by Fraar) hasn’t been seen since the winter carnival when he was placed in the G1 J J Atkins Stakes, G2 BRC Sires’ Produce and G2 Champagne Classic.
Blinkers have been added first-up and he is priced at $11 in pre-post markets for the straight-six assignment. “The trip away to Melbourne could be the making of him,” Gollan predicted. “I think he has a big future.”
Looks Like The Cat is a homebred for Troy, Geoff and Ron Schmidt and is raced in partnership with Steve Jones, Michael Stanton and Dean Wilson. He holds a Group 1 nomination for the Caulfield Guineas on October 11.
Gollan has hit the ground running defending his first Brisbane trainers’ premiership and Husson gelding Hi Son broke through at his fourth run for the stable at Doomben last Saturday.
Hi Son (5g Husson – Danish Colony by Danzero) was placed in the G3 Gunsynd Classic at Doomben last year before injuring a hock. “I will give him one more run before a spell,” Gollan confirmed. “I’m keen to bring him back for a full campaign – he has the makings of a very good horse next year.”
Husson (Arg) is standing at Vinery for a $13,200 (inc gst) service fee.
