Equiano popular at Tattersalls Foal Sale

Equiano was a favourites with buyers among first-season sires during Day 2 of the Tattersalls Foal Sale on Thursday.

A colt by the Swettenham Stud shuttler from Dr Fong mare Classical Dancer made the Top 5 on the first-season leader-board at 70,000 guineas (AUD 112,525).  He was part of the Trickledown Stud consignment and was purchased by prominent agent Peter Doyle.

The Tattersalls result follows a similar return at the Goffs Foal Sale earlier this month when an Equiano colt made 90,000 euros (AUD 111,120).

The Equiano – Classical Dancer colt is a March foal and his dam won at Windsor and was stakes placed at Newbury and Goodwood as a three year-old.

She has had two to race so far;  Zaaqya (Nayef) – a three-time winner for Sheikh Hamdan and Topanga Canyon (Nayef) – a Wolverhampton maiden winner earlier this year for trainer Andrew Balding.

Classical Dancer is a half-sister to Italian Group 1 winner Imperial Dancer (Primo Dominie).

Next best among the Equiano foals at Tattersalls was a colt from Fame Is The Spur (Motivator).  Offered by Newsells Park, he was purchased by Margaret O’Toole for 41,000 guineas (AUD 65,910).

Right behind him was an Equiano colt out of Irish Light (Irish River).  He made 40,000 guineas (AUD 64,300) to the bid of Paul Chapman.

There are another 13 Equiano foals catalogued for the final two sessions of the Tattersalls Foal Sale on Friday and Saturday.

Equiano (Fr) is currently standing his second southern season at Swettenham Stud for a $16,500 service fee.
