Exceed And Excel soars in Sires’ Produce Stakes

Guelph sent her sire Exceed And Excel soaring into the stratosphere with a withering burst to win the G1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m)  at Randwick on Saturday.

Exceed And Excel stitched up the Australian 2YO title when Overreach claimed the $3.50 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill and he went further ahead with another $305,000 winner’s purse at Randwick.

The Darley champion has sired 11 juvenile winners of 20 races in Australia this season and his earnings in that category are over $4.75 million.  Glenlogan Park freshman Real Saga is next best with $1.45 million.

Guelph (2f Exceed And Excel – Camarilla by Elusive Quality) put the writing on the wall with a fast finishing fourth in the Golden Slipper and she relished the extra furlong to defeat Scandiva (Redoute’s Choice) and Overreach (Exceed And Excel).

“She was impressive and is so tough,” trainer Peter Snowden said.  “She saves everything for race day and I will have to think about backing her up in the Champagne Stakes.”

The $400,000 G1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) is scheduled for April 27 at Randwick.

Guelph emulated her mother Camarilla who won the 2007 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes.  The mare has a yearling colt by Shamardal but she died a month after foaling a Street Cry colt last September.  Second-dam Camarena won the 1999 Queensland Derby and is a sister to the dam of Darley’s G1 star Sepoy.

The Sires’ Produce Stakes followed an opening double for Darley stallions on Black Caviar day.  Safeguard (Exceed And Excel) overcame a slow start to win the G3Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) and Toydini (Bernardini) dominated the G3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).
