Victorian based Volitant sired his first winner courtesy of Fast Money in the Canberra Xmas Party Maiden (1200m) on Sunday.
Fast Money (3g Volitant – Overly by Over) led by a clear margin under experienced hoop Kevin Sweeney and had enough in reserve to prevail in a three-way finish. Trained locally by Gratz Vella, he is the first foal from a mare who won races at Taree, Eden and Nowra.
Volitant won the G3 Moonga Stakes and G3 Victoria Hcp at Caulfield beating top-class sprinters Yell and Titanic Jack.
A son of Arrowfield champion Flying Spur, he retired in 2007 but was caught up in the purple zone of the E.I. crisis at Eagle Park Stud in NSW. An ownership dispute scuppered his second season and he was subsequently transferred to Victoria.
Volitant is now based at Michael Howard’s Oxford Park in Bunyip and stands for a $3,300 (inc gst) service fee.
The Flying Spur branch of the Danehill sireline is up and running with Jet Spur (Glenlogan Pk) and the next wave will be led by first-season sires Casino Prince (Patinack) and Magnus (Eliza Park).
