A brother to Group 3 winner Trump topped the Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) leader-board at the Inglis Classic yearling sale this week.
The Written Tycoon – Queenie colt fetched $400,000 from the consignment of Newgate Farm. FBAA members Julian Blaxland (Blue Sky Bloodstock) and Lenny Russo (Bluegrass Bloodstock) combined to buy him on behalf of Dream Thoroughbreds and trainer Anthony Freedman.
“That was a pleasing result and we did think he would sell for north of $300,000,” Newgate Farm’s Henry Field said. “We bought Queenie to be mated with Winning Rupert who is a son of Written Tycoon. She has a lovely colt by him and is back in foal to him so it’s good to see such a very positive result.”
Blue Sky Bloodstock also bought another Written Tycoon colt for $175,000 on behalf of 2K Thoroughbreds and Toby Edmonds. Offered by Newhaven Park, he’s the second foal from Night Train (Commands) who won three races in WA.
The Classic Sale was a marathon with Inglis increasing the catalogue from 600 lots to more than 1,000 and results were patchy in parts over five days of trade.
Randwick Bloodstock dominated the opening session with fillies by I Am Invincible from Limbo Down ($330,000) and Runs Deep ($300,000).
RBA principal Brett Howard bought the duo for Star Thoroughbreds founder Denise Martin who won the $1 million Inglis Sprint with Fiesta (I Am Invincible) just hours earlier at Warwick Farm. “I told Brett to target I Am Invincible,” Martin said. “I didn’t think I would be able to buy both but winning a million-dollar race makes you braver.”
An impressive Hinchinbrook colt from Kenmore Lodge was knocked down to Louis Le Metayer’s Astute Bloodstock for $220,000. “On type, I think he’s one of the Top 5 lots of the sale,” Le Metayer claimed. “He has size, scope and substance and moved well so I was pleased to get him.”
The colt is from a winning half-sister to Group 2 winner Vormista and will be pre-trained by Archie Alexander for Hong Kong-based clients of Astute Bloodstock.
Le Metayer also weighed in with $185,000 for a Not a Single Doubt colt (Lot 108) from Middlebrook Valley and $150,000 for a Toronado filly (Lot 698) from Lustre Lodge.
Belmont Bloodstock Agency’s Damon Gabbedy purchased fillies by So You Think ($130,000) and Zoustar ($100,000) among his five buys at Riverside Stables. They are destined for Perth-based brothers Dan and Ben Pearce who have sent Ascot stakes winner Angelic Ruler to Melbourne for the G2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
The So You Think filly (Lot 727) is out of an unraced daughter of NZ Group 1 champion Staring and the Zoustar filly (Lot 536) descends from Perth stakes winner Ebony Magic (Bletchley Park).
Top-price among Boomer Bloodstock’s eight buys – a $120,000 Time For War colt – is also heading west to trainer Lindsey Smith. He was sold by Fairview Park and is the first foal of Invincible Isla (I Am Invincible).
Boomer Bloodstock’s Craig Rounsefell and Smith have shared a Group 1 with Railway Stakes winner Scales of Justice. His latest summer campaign was aborted due to a bruised hoof but Smith is hoping to get him back for another prep this season.
Dean Watt Bloodstock spent $100,000 apiece for a Vancouver colt and Written Tycoon filly from Aquis Farm on account of Dynamic Syndications. Peter Ford Thoroughbreds also parted with $100,000 for a Fastnet Rock – Cautious filly that will go into training with Robbie Griffiths.
Pinhook Bloodstock’s Dave Mee was active buying a half-dozen yearlings on behalf of Flying Start Syndications, Platinum Breeding and Kym Hann Racing. The Sebring filly from a half-sister to G3 AJC Breeders Classic winner Pasikatera (Lot 606) was top-priced at $95,000.
Group 1 winning trainer Lloyd Kennewell and Group 1 Bloodstock’s Mathew Becker made headlines with $1.70 million for an I Am Invincible colt at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and they targeted another yearling by the Yarraman Park champion at the Classic Sale.
The latest I Am Invincible colt cost $375,000 from Newgate Farm and he’s from Fastnet Rock stakes performer Teardrop Rock.
Mitchell Bloodstock bought six yearlings within the same price range topped by the $70,000 Scissor Kick colt from Bruges. His NZ-bred dam won 7 races in Melbourne for trainer Colin Little and she was also stakes placed in Adelaide.
Sheamus Mills Bloodstock bought fillies by Nicconi ($60,000) and Street Boss ($15,000), Laurel Oak Bloodstock paid $50,000 for a Deep Field filly, DGR Thoroughbred Services bid $80,000 for a Bull Point colt and JJ Gordon Bloodstock nailed a bargain-priced More Than Ready colt ($72,500) for trainer Nick Ryan.
The Vinery legend’s colt is the first foal of Sydney winner Joyful Journey (Shamardal) and has already earned a reassuring nickname at Caulfield. “Our More Than Ready has arrived,” Ryan tweeted shortly after the Classic Sale. “Rocket is a little bit tired after a very big week, but he has settled in well.”
