Fine first for Grey Swallow

Grey Swallow sired his first winner when grey filly Fine Cinders won the Caltex Gateway Hcp (1600m) at Wodonga on Saturday.

Fine Cinders (3f Grey Swallow – Gilded Asset by Gilded Time) sat on the pace before holding out quick closer Haiti (Nadeem) at her fifth start.  She is a homebred for the Monish family and is trained at Flemington by Mat Ellerton and Simon Zahra.

Grey Swallow (Daylami) was unbeaten at two finishing with an 8 length victory in the G3 Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown.  He returned to claim the Irish Derby in 2004 and then came back for another G1 triumph in the Tatts Gold Cup at the Curragh in 2005.

Trainer Dermot Weld took him on the road in 2006 for a G2 victory at Hollywood Park before he signed off with an unplaced effort in the 2006 Cox Plate won by Fields Of Omagh.

Grey Swallow was galloped on at Moonee Valley and was retired to Woodside Park.  Far from being rushed off his feet, the grey stallion has averaged books of just 30 mares in five seasons at the Victorian stud.

Woodside Park is owned by former Toll Transport chairman Peter Rowsthorn and he has been forced to cut Grey Swallow’s fee from $16,500 to $4,400 in that time.
