First for Testa at Vinery

Panipique became the 25th Australian stakes winner for Testa Rossa when she defeated Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily in the Listed Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

The win was a first for Vinery.  All Testa Rossa stakes winners before the Quezette result were conceived at Yallambee Stud in Victoria.  He stood there for five seasons until relocating to the Hunter Valley in 2006.

Panipique (3f Testa Rossa – Our Quivira by Spinning World) failed to reach a $250,000 reserve at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions and was retained by Turangga Farm’s Stuart Ramsey.  She had been unplaced in the Listed Dermody Stakes in July but trainer Peter Moody said she hit the line really well in Adelaide.

Crystal Lily (Stratum) was a red hot $1.70 favourite but she was overhauled in the final furlong.  The Golden Slipper winner deserves another chance – the third horse home was beaten more than four lengths.

“She’s got plenty of ability and worked well during the week,” Moody said.  “That gave us a good feel until we saw a Golden Slipper winner in the field.”

Moody has her nominated for the G1 Thousand Guineas and she’s likely to have lead-up runs in the Danehill Stakes at Flemington and the Guineas Prelude at Caulfield.

Panipique is one of two named foals produced by Spinning World mare Our Quivira who was also prepared by Moody.  She was a G3 winner of the Dermody Stakes in Adelaide and Listed Kensington Stakes at Flemington.
