First season sires at Karaka

Karaka 2010 marks the introduction of 24 first season sires at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales.  The progeny of these sires make up 287 of the 1621 lots catalogued for the Premier, Select and Festival Sales.

AD VALOREM (Danzig)  Stands at Darley
By outstanding sire of sires Danzig, Ad Valorem, among his four wins, won the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes (1200m) as a two-year-old and the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) as a four-year-old.  His dam Classy Women also won on four occasions including a Group 3 win and a Group 1 placing in the Test Stakes.  

Highlight: Lot 948 – Bay Colt – Ad Valorem x Demain (Zabeel) – Goodwood Stud
This September foal is out of Demain, a Zabeel daughter of Group 2 Riesling Slipper Trial winner Manana.  This makes Demain a close relative of multiple stakes-winners Accept (Military Plume) and Omens (Octagonal).

ARTIE SCHILLER  (El Prado)  Stands at Independent Stallions
Artie Schiller is by the same Group 1 winning sire as Medaglia D’oro, the sire of Rachel Alexandra, in El Prado. Winner of the prestigious Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, Artie Schiller’s first two dams (Hidden Light and Tallahto) are both dual Group 1 winners themselves.

An early foal, this colt’s dam won as a juvenile and his family is full of stakes performing juveniles including Brilliance, Seaside Lady, Peignoir, Dark Paradise, Dance Baby Dance, Flash Red, and Troubled Dance.

AUSSIE RULES  (Danehill)  Stands at Coolmore
Aussie Rules is a dual Gr.1 winning miler by Danehill out of star racemare Last Second. From the family of Gr.1 winners Alborada, Quarter Moon and Yesterday, Aussie Rules won the French 2000 Guineas Gr.1 and Shadwell Turf Mile Gr.1 as a three-year-old.

From the family of Canny Lad, Canny Lass, and Camarilla, this filly is out of Clareta, the dam of three foals to race for three winners including six time winner Drovetti (Mossman).

CACIQUE  (Danehill)  Stands at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor in England
A dual Group 1 winner, Cacique is a son of UK broodmare of the year Hasili whose Group 1 produce include four full siblings to Cacique including Banks Hill. Adding further to the sire potential of Cacique is the fact that another full-brother is leading European sire Dansili, the sire of four individual Group 1 winners.

From a very successful international family this filly holds plenty of residual value being the daughter of Listed winner and Group 1 placed Erudite. This is also the family of triple Grade 1 winner Ventura and Group winners Vortex, Danefair, Trade Fair, Prove,  and Silver Touch.

CALIFORNIA DANE  (Danehill)  Stands at Baerami Thoroughbreds
California Dane is one of the fastest sons of world champion sire Danehill. The winner of six of thirteen races including the Group 2 Stanley Wootton Stakes (1200m) and the Group 2 Moir Stakes which are both staged at Moonee Valley where he broke the track record for 1200m. Out of a Seattle Slew mare, California Dane is from a superb international family which includes leading sires Broad Brush and Capote.

This colt’s seven time winning dam is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Mardi’s Magic and Surrealist, the dam of 2006 Australian Champion 3YO Racing to Win.

CHURCHILL DOWNS (Danehill)  Stands at Blue Gum Farm
A brilliant two-year-old who placed in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), Churchill Downs trained on to win the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at three and place in the Group 1 Ascot Vale Stakes (1200m) behind Gold Edition. Churchill Downs represents the same Danehill/Sharpen Up cross as Danehill Dancer being out of a Diesis mare

Highlight: Lot 1133 – Brown Colt – Churchill Downs x Limerick Lady (Al Khawaaneeg)
This colt’s dam won seven races in Australia and was stakes-placed in Melbourne. Her only foal to race has won two races to 2008/09.

DANGER LOOMS (Dangerous)  Stands at Ashford Park Stud
Precocious at two, Danger Looms won the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes and Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview before running fourth in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude in his classic year. Danger Looms is by Dangerous, a son of Danehill from the Eight Carat family who himself was Group 1 placed at two.

The third foal of four time winning Grosvenor mare Ambush whose progeny have sold to $110,000, this filly’s grand-dam is Group 2 Desert Gold Stakes winner Madame Bardot.

DARCI BRAHMA  (Danehill)  Stands at The Oaks Stud
New Zealand’s Champion 2YO, 3YO, and overall sprinter in 2006/07, Darci Brahma won five Group 1 races including the Group 1 TJ Smith Classic and the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas. The highest priced yearling of his generation at Karaka, Darci Brahma had looks which commanded $1.1 million dollars in the sales ring. By Danehill, Darci Brahma is out of Group 1 Oaks winning Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel), a half-sister to Romanee Conti, the dam of Ethereal.

Out of quadruple Group 1 winner Giovana this colt is a half-brother to Karaka’s 2009 $800,000 sale-topping Encosta De Lago colt.

DR GREEN  (Fusaichi Pegasus)  Stands at Palmaday Stud
A super fast son of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, Dr Green won the Listed Wellesley Stakes at two and the Listed Wanganui Guineas at three. Dr Green is out of stakes winning Last Tycoon mare Palia, a full-sister to the dams of Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes winner Casino Prince and Group 2 HK Derby Trial winner Green Birdie.

This colt hails from Stradbroke Handicap winner Rainburst, as does this season’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder (Redoute’s Choice).

EXCITES  (Danewin)  Stands at Vinery
Excites is by successful sire Danewin out of the multiple Group 2 winner and star producer Staging, the dam of last season’s Group 1 BTC Cup winner Duporth and Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes place-getter Tickets. Excites himself won the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes at two and went on to run second in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at three.

This colt is a half-brother to three winners including Listed Tatt’t Cup victor and Group 1 Brisbane Cup placed Shamrock Shore (Song of Tara). His Group 1 winning grand-dam, Gamine, is also the grand-dam of South Africa’s 2007 Champion 3YO filly, and the Dubai’s Champion Older mare, Sun Classique.

FAST N FAMOUS  (Redoute’s Choice)  Stands at Waikato Stud
By Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice, Fast n Famous represents everything that encompasses Danehill speed. A winner of the Group 3 Gilgai, where he beat Group 1 winners Dance Hero and Shadoways, Fast n Famous finished fourth or better in three of Australia’s top Group 1 sprints the Galaxy, the All Aged Stakes, and the BTC Cup. His stakes winning dam Zalinda (Zabeel) is out of Group 1 Railway Handicap winner Alynda.

A grandson of Group 1 NZ 1000 Guineas winner Plume, this colt is a half-brother to last season’s dual Group 1 winner Maco’Reilly.

GALLANT GURU  (Montjeu)  Stands at White Robe Lodge
Gallant Guru was a class act as a racehorse. A winning stakes placed two-year-old, Gallant Guru trained on to win four races in a row at three and four years of age. His string of wins at three included the Listed Geelong Classic and Listed Hill-Smith Stakes, while at four he scored in both the Group 2 Sandown Classic and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. By Champion International sire Montjeu, Gallant Guru is out of Don’t Say Halo mare Proud Halo, making him a half-brother to Champion 3YO Gold Guru.

From the extremely fast  Stage Hit family this colt is a half-brother to Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes winner and leading South Island sprinter Cherry Creek, a winner of eight races.

GONE FOR REAL  (Gone West)  Stands at Dalacine Farm
By Champion US sire Gone West, Gone For Real won at Group 3 level in the USA before retiring to stud there. With 71% winners to runners in the USA, Gone For Real was imported to stand in New Zealand in 2007. His dam by Drone is stakes-winner Intently, already the grand-dam of a Group 1 and Group 2 winner.

This speedy son of Danehill defeated no less than seven Group 1 winners in his eight start career including the likes of Stratum, Perfectly Ready, and Red Dazzler. From a speed oriented family which includes the likes of Schubert and leading sire Lion Hunter, Gonski himself is a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Recast.

HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR  (Danehill)  Stands at  Coolmore
By the remarkable sire of sires Danehill, dual Group 1 winning European two-year-old Holy Roman Emperor has got a stunning sire’s pedigree. He is out of a Secretariat mare, like Storm Cat, A.P. Indy, Gone West, and Volksraad etc, from the family of  Encosta de Lago, Flying Spur and Night Shift .

LUCKY UNICORN  (Redoute’s Choice)  Stands at Cambridge Stud
By Redoute’s Choice from a wonderfully fast family, Lucky Unicorn was unbeaten in Hong Kong as a juvenile before returning to Australia to capture the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m). A three-quarter brother to Champion Hong Kong sprinter Inspiration (Flying Spur), Lucky Unicorn hails from a family full of Group 1 winning sprinters including Masked Party, Festal, and Dracula.

NADEEM (Redoute’s Choice)  Stands at Darley
Like his sire Redoute’s Choice, Nadeem won the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes as a spring two-year-old and in doing so beat Champion filly Miss Finland. Out of dual Group 1 classic filly Candide, Nadeem is a half brother to Hong Kong Group 1 winner Billion Win and to Aulide, the dam of Group 1 Australasian Oaks winner Marju Snip.

Perfectly Ready is one of only three Australian Group 1 winning sons of More Than Ready at stud. A winner of the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude at two, Perfectly Ready went on to beat the older sprinters in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap as a three-year-old, and in the same season ran second in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes. His dam is a Danehill half-sister to Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Belle Du Jour from the well regarded Belle family.

REMIND  (Deputy Minister)  Stands at Long Acres Stud
By the same champion sire as Dehere, Remind entered stud in New Zealand in2007 after a successful racing career which saw him win or place in 11 Group or Listed events in the USA. The five time winner also placed fourth in the Group 1 Keeneland Turf Mile which took his earnings close to US$500,000. Remind is one of five stakes winners produced by his dam Watch the Time (Timeless Moment).

This colt’s dam is a half-sister to Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes winner Zephyr Zip. This colt is a half-brother to three winners including Danica Guy’s promising Capone (Al Akbar).

ROYAL GEM  (Royal Academy)  Stands at Stoney Bridge
By Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner and successful sire Royal Academy, Royal Gem won the Group 3 Bay Meadows Derby at three and later that season finished third in the Group 1 Hollywood Derby. A winner of four races, Royal Gem is a half-brother to Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed The Seven Seas being out of stakes winner Tiffany’s Gem (Effervescing).

Out of a six time winning half-sister to Group 2 winning sprinter Pay My Bail (Justice Prevails), this filly is a half-sister to 2009 Wellington Cup winner Megapins (Pins).

SIROCCO  (Shy Tom)  Stands at Archer Park
Sirocco won seven races from 1400m – 1650m in Hong Kong, one of the world’s most competitive racing environments. A grandson of Blushing Groom, Sirocco hails from a strong South American family highlighted by the fact that his dam Ma Lattre (Mountdrago) won to Group 2 level and was Group 1 placed.

This filly is the first foal of a winning half sister to top Malaysian sprinter Happy Gilmour – Smooth Sailing (Kinjite) and last season’s South Island Filly of the Year Bird (Danasinga).

STRADA  (Danehill)  Stands at Widden Stud
Strada is a record breaking dual Listed winner by Champion sire Danehill. He won the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes and Listed Tatts Carrington Stakes as a three year old and in doing so beat 17 stakes winners. He is a full brother to Group 1 CF Orr Stakes winner Shinzig being out of Group 1 winning mare Shindig (Straight Strike).

Out of a two time winner this colt is from the immediate family of Group 1 Epsom Handicap winner Sound Horizon, and Group winners Ebony Honor and Crianca.

WRITTEN TYCOON  (Iglesia)   Stands at Eliza Park
A well-performed juvenile, Written Tycoon won the Group 2 Todman Slipper at two and came back to beat both Stratum and Snitzel in the Group 3 San Domenico at three where he placed second. A grand-son of Last Tycoon, Written Tycoon is out of four time winning Kenmare mare Party Miss from the family of Group 1 winners Anthems and Yell.

A grand-daughter of Group 1 WA Oaks winner True Devotion, this filly is a half-sister to last season’s Group 2 Royal Stakes placed Cassini (Reset).

ZED  (Zabeel)   Stands at Little Avondale Stud
A winning racehorse in a limited career, Zed is impeccably bred being by Champion sire Zabeel out of Emerald Dream, a Group 1 winning mare by the great Danehill. Zed is a direct descendent of Eight Carat and Cotehele House making him a part of a family full of notable sires including Kaapstad, Danewin, Octagonal, Commands, Don Eduardo, and Viking Ruler.
