Cambridge Stud freshman Burgundy (NZ) got his career off to a flying start on Tuesday when his first runner Hard Merchandize took out the Hunting & Fishing 2YO (1000m) at Otaki.
The Gary Vile trained youngster went into his debut off two trial wins and never looked in danger while cruising to the line more than a length clear of Empress Tzu Hsi (Power) and Boyslightup (Duporth).
“He is a professional little horse and is very smart,” Vile said. “He will have a break now and then we will try and qualify for the Karaka Million.”
Bred by Christopher Grace, Hard Merchandize was a $38,000 buy from the Little Avondale draft at the 2016 NZB Karaka Select yearling sale. His dam Pride And Passion (Encosta De Lago) is a daughter of G1 Golden Slipper winner Calaway Gal.
Burgundy is a Redoute’s Choice half-brother to Darci Brahma and he won 5 black-type races in 12 starts from 1200m to 1600m. He stands at Cambridge Stud for a $5,000 service fee.
