First winner by Frightening

Former Bart Cumming trained stayer Frightening sired his first winner at Toowoomba on Saturday evening.

Locally prepared gelding Frightening Bolt broke through at his second start in the Neil Mansell Concrete Maiden (1200m).  He had been placed on debut at Clifford Park on April 5.

“He’s a nice horse and I’m looking forward to stepping him up in distance,” trainer Mick Nolan said.  “We knew he had improved since his first run and that last 400 metres was really impressive.”

Frightening Bolt (3g Frightening – Seainta by Sea Road) finished full of running under apprentice Jimmy Orman to defeat Star Amore (Show A Heart) and Look At Anything (Casino Prince).  He scored by over a length in a class record time of 1.14.04s on a dead track.

Part-owner Michael Grieve bred the winner from a free service to Frightening who stood at Malabar Stud in Beaudesert.

Malabar owner Rosemary Hall donated a service to him for Champion Mare at the 2011 Royal Queensland Show.  Ringmaster Jan McMillan won the blue-ribbon with Great Northern (Dangerous) who had claimed a Cessnock maiden prior to beginning her show hack career.

McMillan gave the prize to Grieve and he used it for his mare Seainta.  Her earlier foals before Frightening Bolt include Toowoomba Cup placegetter Dodging Eddie.

Frightening (Langfuhr) was bred by Bart Cummings and the master trained him to victories in the G2 Moonee Valley Cup and G3 Coongy Hcp in 2003.  He was one of the fancies in that year’s Melbourne Cup but faded to finish midfield behind Makybe Diva.

Frightening sired 20 foals in his first three seasons at Malabar Stud between 2008 and 2010.
