French Group 2 winner Planet Five (USA) launched his stud career with an early winner at Ascot on Saturday.
The Ted Martinovich trained youngster Diamond Tonique turned the tables on Chanzig (War Chant) in the Westspeed Plate (1100m) after finishing fourth to that colt on debut a fortnight ago.
“I thought he would measure up with a clear run because he copped a bit of interference first-up,” Martinovich said. “He will have a few weeks off and we can give him a couple of runs leading up to the Magic Millions 2YO lassic.”
Diamond Tonique (2c Planet Five – Sleek Tonique by Second Empire) was sold for $42,000 at the 2014 Perth Magic Millions. His dam Sleek Tonique won three sprints at Belmont and her yearling colt by Planet Five has been catalogued as Lot 303 for the 2015 Perth Magic Millions.
Sleek Tonique was bred by Bob Peters and is from a daughter of his 1995 Group 1 SAJC Goodwood Hcp winner Centisle (Centaine).
Planet Five (Storm Cat) was trained by Pascal Bary for the Niarchos family and scored a crowning victory in the 2010 Prix du Gros Chene (1000m) at Chantilly. He injured a fetlock after unplaced runs in the G1 Prix Maurice De Gheest and G1 Prix De L’Abbaye and was exported to Western Australia after just 11 starts.
His dam Six Perfections was a Group 1 winner of the Prix Marcel Boussac and Jacques Le Marois before an epic win in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita.
Planet Five stands for a $4,400 (inc gst) fee at Touchstone Farm.
