Swettenham Stud shuttler Toronado (Ire) was represented by his first winner in France on Sunday.
Al Shaqab homebred Baylagan was a debut winner of the Prix Mercier-La Vendee (1100m) at Lion d’Angers. He scored by a half-head from the fillies Alissachope (Kheleyf) and Altropasso (Helmet).
Baylagan (2c Toronado – Al Waghaa by Muhtathir) is from a half-sister to the dam of Group 1 stallion Style Vendome who stands at Haras de Bouquetot.
Toronado (High Chaparral) was a Group 1 winner of the Sussex Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes for Al Shaqab. He covered three books at the English National Stud before a transfer to Haras de Bouquetot last year.
There were 132 foals from his first Australian book off a $22,000 service fee at Swettenham and they averaged $82,500 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale in March. Top price of $340,000 was paid by Team Hawkes for the colt from Flemington stakes winner She’s Got Gears (Invincible Spirit).
