First winner by Venice Beach

Venice Beach joined the long list of Redoute’s Choice stallions to be credited with a winner on Friday.

His first-crop filly Bay Truffle flew from the tail to score by a long neck in the Electrolux Maiden Hcp (1000m) at Orange. She also gave trainer Matt Vella his first winner and he prepares the filly for a partnership that includes Bob Charley and Pat Langbien whose husband Ken bred the filly.

Vella and his wife Simone, who rides trackwork for the stable, called on years of experience when setting up at Hawkesbury earlier this year.  Matt worked for Bart Cummings and George Altomonte breaking in the likes of Group 1 stars So You Think and Overreach.

Studmaster Don Scott stands Venice Beach at Cara Paliba in Wilberforce. The property was originally used by Tommy Smith to spell his string back in the 1970s.

Venice Beach was bred by Swettenham Stud but a leg injury forced him into retirement without racing. Redoute’s Choice got him from a half-sister to Perth’s all-time Number 1 Northerly (Serheed) and WA stallion Heritage (Flying Spur).

“Venice Beach is a very fertile horse with a lovely temperament,” Scott said. “We stand him for a $7,700 (inc gst) service fee.”

Bay Truffle has a two year-old sister that’s been named Bay Dior. They are from Slick Draw (Bite The Bullet) and are like two peas in a pod.
