Exciting Wellfield Lodge stallion Alamosa landed his first winner with A Beautiful Knight at Wanganui on Saturday.
A Beautiful Knight (2c Alamosa – You Beauty by Comet Shine) was hotly-fancied and won off the front by a half-length. Alamosa’s only other runner to date – Fantamo – was placed on debut at Otaki last month.
Appropriately, A Beautiful Knight was bred and sold by Wellfield at this year’s Karaka Premier Sale for $100,000. He is trained by Graeme Rogerson and his stablemate Abeautifulred (Handsome Ransom) finished second to Planet Rock in the 2011 G1 NZ 1000 Guineas.
A Beautiful Knight is also a half-brother to Bird of Fire (Stravinsky) whose five wins included the G2 VRC Matriarch Stakes, G2 SAJC Queen of the South Stakes and G3 MVRC Tesio Stakes.
Alamosa was a 2yo G1 winner of the ARC Ford Diamond Stakes and he added another two elite level victories the following season in the WRC Thorndon Mile and Otaki Maori WFA Stakes. He was prepared by Peter McKay at Matamata before Wellfield Lodge stepped in with an offer to stand him at stud.
To enhance his stud value, Alamosa was sent to Mick Price in Melbourne and the move paid off with a G1 triumph in the prestigious MRC Toorak Handicap at Caulfield. Shareholders in Alamosa include Belvedere Farm, Cambridge Stud, Curraghmore Stud, Fairdale Stud, Goodwood Stud, Hallmark Stud, Haunui Farm, Pencarrow Stud, Rich Hill Stud, Trelawney Stud and Whakanui Stud.
Alamosa (O’Reilly) was the leading NZ-based first-crop stallion at Karaka earlier this year. They also sold up to $205,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions. He stands for a $12,500 (plus gst) at Wellfield Lodge.
