Newgate Farm’s foundation sire Foxwedge is off the mark with his first winner after talented filly Kentucky Miss scored a brilliant debut victory at Warwick Farm on Thursday.

Prepared at the track by Joe Pride, Kentucky Miss showed plenty of ability in a recent barrier trial win and was well fancied to carry that good form forward to race day.  She jumped fast for Blake Shinn to take up the lead and was never in danger of defeat, accelerating sharply over the concluding stages despite the wet ground to win by several lengths.

“Off the back of only one trial it was a really good performance,” said Pride.  “She’s an exceptionally quick filly which everyone got to see today and there are plenty more wins in store.”

Pride was also full of praise for her sire Foxwedge.  “He’s going to be a quality sire and it’s only a matter of time before he gets more winners.”

Kentucky Miss impressed her rider Blake Shinn.  “She was well educated and it was a dominant display,” he said.  “She loved the going and has the makings of a really nice filly.  We will see her win much better races.”

A $250,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Luskin Park draft, Kentucky Miss runs for a syndicate that features her breeders including Wilf Mula and Paul Whelan.  She’s the first foal of USA stakes winner Twelve Pack Shelly (Deputy Storm).

Twelve Pack Shelly produced another filly by Foxwedge last year and is back in foal to the Group I winning son of champion sire Fastnet Rock.

It was most fitting that the first winner by Foxwedge should have come courtesy of Luskin Park, who bred and sold him as a yearling at Inglis Easter back in 2010 when he fetched $925,000.
