Champion Arrowfield filly Miss Finland produced her first winner at Hawkesbury on Saturday courtesy of her debut colt Woodbine.
Trained by Gai Waterhouse, he started an odds-on favourite in the BOQ Penrith Plate (1000m) and was always travelling like a winner to score by more than two lengths.
Woodbine (3c Hussonet – Miss Finland by Redoute’s Choice) made $750,000 at the 2012 Inglis Easter Sale and is raced by a partnership that includes Arrowfield Pastoral (John Messara), Planette Thoroughbreds (John Leaver), Blue Sky Thoroughbreds (Julian Blaxland) and Belford Productions (Allan Jones)
Miss Finland won five events at Group 1 level during a splendid career that established her as a champion of her generation. Her first foal Miss Helsinki (Hussonet) has been retired to stud this year and Woodbine is followed by a pair of Street Cry fillies. Miss Finland is due to foal to More Than Ready this spring and will then visit Arrowfield newcomer Animal Kingdom.
Woodbine’s sire Hussonet was purchased in 2003 by Arrowfield where he stood for 8 seasons before his transfer to Cornerstone Stud in South Australia. A multiple champion sire in Chile, Hussonet has a career tally of 88 stakes winners, 30 of them from his Australian crops, with Weekend Hussler, Reaan, Gold Trail and Eagle Falls successful at Group 1 level.
