Snitzel is doing a superb job siring youngsters with the same precocious speed that was the hallmark of his own career.
The Arrowfield resident sired his third juvenile winner this season when Flying Snitzel scored a barrier-to-box victory in the Australian Turf Club Maiden Hcp (1200m) at Canterbury on Friday.
Flying Snitzel (2f Snitzel – Hula Flight by Hula Town) joined Randwick winner Amorino and crack Queensland colt Sizzling thanks to a brilliant all-the-way victory on debut. The winner is from deceased Arrowfield mare Hula Flight who was a G1 winner of the 1996 AJC Metropolitan.
Like numerous Snitzels, Flying Snitzel is trained by Gerald Ryan. After two impressive trials, she started an even-money favourite first-up and was never in danger en route to a three length runaway.
Triple Crown Bloodstock owners Michael and Chris Ward are also confirmed Snitzel fans. They combined with Ryan to race his brilliant colt Hot Snitzel who won the LR Ken Russell Memorial and G2 Queensland Sires’ Produce Stakes at the winter carnival.
The brothers were also keen on Sizzling at the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions but couldn’t match the $260,000 bid of property developer David Devine.
The Wards then travelled to Melbourne for the Inglis Premier yearling sale and bought Flying Snitzel for a mere $25,000 from Bellerive Stud’s draft. “She’s doing everything right and is improving all the time,” Michael Ward said. “She is going to get better with more ground.”
Flying Snitzel is eligible for the $250,000 Inglis Nursery at Warwick Farm next Saturday. “It’s certainly an option,” Ward said. “The Snitzels are a tough breed. Hot Snitzel does best when he backs up.”
Snitzel came close to siring a hat-trick at Canterbury. His mare Tigress Lily was narrowly beaten in Race 2 and former Kiwi gelding St Beune followed up with a three length victory in Race 3.
He followed up with another winner at Moonee Valley’s night meeting when Weekend Special blitzed the Essingdon Mazda 55 Hcp (955m) in a slick 55.51s.
Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) has sired 101 winners of 174 races at a 65% strike-rate. He stands alongside his own sire at Arrowfield for a $27,500 (inc gst) service fee.
Arrowfield’s draft at the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions includes Snitzel colts from North Flow (Rory’s Jester) and Orchid Oasis (Mr Prospector) plus a filly out of Flidais (Timber Country).
