Champion mare Goldikova has delivered her first foal at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
Goldikova (8m Anabaa – Born Gold by Blushing Groom) foaled a Galileo colt on Sunday and she will be bred back to the Coolmore champion.
A homebred for Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, Goldikova won 14 Group 1 events including four editions of the Prix Rothschild at Deauville. She also claimed the Breeders’ Cup Mile three times between 2008 and 2010 and finished third, beaten a length, in its 2011 running at Churchill Downs.
Her Group 1 roll-call eclipsed the previous benchmark set by Miesque. Trainer Freddie Head, who rode Miesque and her sire Anabaa during a accomplished career in the saddle, remains in awe of Goldikova.
“She was in a class of her own and could do anything,” Head said. “What else can you say?”
Goldikova is by former Widden shuttler Anabaa and her dam Born Gold is a sister to the 1993 Coronation Stakes winner Gold Splash. The family traces back to 1981 Arc de Triomphe winner Gold River.
