Galileo the star turn at Tattersalls December Sale

A colt and a filly by all-conquering stallion Galileo provided the star turns at the opening session of the Tattersalls December Sale on Monday.  They both made 140,000 guineas.

Galileo is proving to be a chip off the old block at Coolmore Stud as he looks to emulate the legendary feats of his own sire Sadler’s Wells.  With no fewer than seven individual Group 1 winners in 2010 alone, his progeny are understandably in great demand.

The Galileo yearlings at the Tattersalls October Sale (Book 1) averaged just shy of 300,000 guineas including the 1.2 million top-priced European yearling.  He didn’t manage to reach those heights during on Monday but still provided a trio of six figure lots as well as the sale topping pair.

His son out of the Slew O’Gold mare Golden Coral was knocked down to Coolmore’s Demi O’Byrne for 140,000 guineas.  Consigned from David and Diane Nagle’s Barronstown Stud, the colt’s dam is a sister to G1 Coronation Stakes winner Golden Opinion.

Later in the evening the Galileo filly out of the Cozzene mare Cozzene’s Angel equaled that figure when selling to London-based agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.  Consigned from Lady Lloyd-Webber’s Watership Down Stud, she is a half-sister to the G1 winner Toccet.

The third highest priced lot for the day was 115,000 guineas for the Teofilo colt out of the stakes performed Nashwan mare Whirly Bird.  Trainer Roger Charlton was the buyer.  “I liked many of the Teofilo yearlings I saw earlier this year,” he said.  “They were all very alike with plenty of quality.  This is, of course, a family that I know well through Inchinor.”

The yearling session saw a total of 194 lots average 18,426 guineas which was down 19% from last year.

The December Sale comprises yesterday’s sole session of yearlings and it will be followed by foal sessions from November 24 to 27 and broodmare sessions from November 29 to December 2.
