Gatewood to stud in Ireland

Geelong Cup winner Gatewood (GB) has been retired to serve his first book in Ireland.

The dual Group 3 winning son of Galileo was last seen in June running third in the LR Fred Archer Stakes (2400m) at Newmarket.

Gatewood (7h Galileo – Felicity by Selkirk) was bred and raced by George Strawbridge who later sold a share to OTI Racing’s Terry Henderson and Simon O’Donnell.  “He’s one of the most honest horses and gave me the thrill of a lifetime – my first win at Royal Ascot,” said Strawbridge.  “He was such an exciting horse to watch, coming from the back at the end of the race with an amazing turn of foot.”

Gatewood was saddled by John Gosden to win 8 races topped by the G3 Geelong Cup, G3 Prix de Reux at Deauville and the Wolferton Hcp at Royal Ascot.

He came off a farcically slow pace to win the 2012 Geelong Cup and then survive a protest.  Jockey Glen Boss stoked up Gatewood and was excited by his finish.  “I’m taken by his splits – he sprinted quickly.”

Gatewood (pictured) is out of a half-sister to Group 2 winners Sleeping Indian and Aiken and will cover his first mares at Windmill View Stud in Co. Galway.
