Gee up in Tasmanian Thousand Guineas

Gee Gee’s La Quita gave leading Tasmanian owner-breeders Paul and Elizabeth Geard another feature victory in the Aceland Stud Thousand Guineas (1600m) in Launceston on Wednesday evening.

The Geards also race her older half-brother Geegees Blackflash (Clangalang) who will lead the home defence in the Hobart and Launceston Cups this month.

Gee Gee’s La Quita (3f Atlantis Prince – La Quita by Grand Lodge) was always travelling like a winner in the Guineas.  Visiting jockey Robert Thompson let her roll to the front and she was still full of running on the line to score by more two lengths.

“I told Robert to let her bowl along if nothing else was prepared to lead,” trainer Stuart Gandy said.  “She’s such a tough filly and is bred to get over ground.  We will now head to the Strutt Stakes and Tasmanian Oaks.”

Gee Gee’s La Quita is from the penultimate crop of Tagula sire Atlantis Prince who stood at Walter McShane’s Broadmarsh Stud until his death in April 2009.  He was raced by Sheikh Mohammed to win the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot.

The Guineas winner is a homebred for the Geards and her dam La Quita is an unraced half-sister to G1 South Australian Derby winner Cheviot (Average Game).  The mare has a yearling filly and a filly foal by G3 winning Testa Rossa sire Wordsmith.
