Wattle Brae Stud sire Get Square is beginning to make an impact at stud now that his first crop three year-olds are getting over ground.
Get Square is a son of super sire Redoute’s Choice and he was one of the leading classic horses in a generation that also included the likes of Viewed, Theseo and Efficient.
Trained by John O’Shea, Get Square was retired after a handful of starts but not before he claimed the G3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
His Gold Coast based gelding Square Up broke through in just the second week of the new racing season at Ipswich. He appreciated stepping up to 1660m and will keep progressing now that he has found the line.
Square Up (3g Get Square – Sky Cutter by Hurricane Sky) was an $11,500 buy at Magic Millions 2010 QTIS 600 yearling sale for clients of trainer Bruce Hill.
“Bruce believes Square Up has staying potential — just how far he can run, only time will tell,” part-owner Ross McGregor said this week. “He was caught wide at Ipswich but toughed it out to win in a tight finish.
“Get Square could well be the next sire of good staying types. Square Up is still learning the ropes but he’s a very tractable type and all the Get Squares appear to be very much the same.”
Get Square is value plus at a $3,300 (inc gst) service fee this year.
Wattle Brae owners Gary and Phoebe Turkington will also stand Court Command (Commands), Easy Rocking (Barathea), Mustaneer (Gone West) and newcomer Walking Or Dancing (Falvelon) at the leading Queensland stud this year.
