Grand start for Racetree stallion

Hotel Grand sired his first winner when odds-on favourite Metonmy scored a three length victory at Moonee Valley on Friday night.  The Racetree freshman was a Group 1 winner of the AJC Spring Champion Stakes and Randwick Guineas before retiring to the Innisplain nursery in 2007.

Metonymy (2f  Hotel Grand – Shack by Canny Lad) is one of 50 live foals from his first crop.  She was unextended to win the Transpacific Cleanaway Plate putting seven lengths between the placegetters Noble Twostep (Stratum) and Alanza (Hussonet).

The Peter Moody trained filly was expected to break her duck on the back of a black-type placing in the Listed MRC Merson Cooper Stakes at Sandown.  “She’s still learning,” Moody said last night.  “We put the winkers on and that made a difference.  She’s a Magic Millions filly but I don’t think we will be going to the Gold Coast.”

Moody bought Metonymy for $40,000 at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  Her dam Shack is a sister to G3 AJC Kindergarten Stakes winner Peat Bog and a half-sister to G2 AJC Emancipation Stakes winner Heather (Grand Lodge).

Shack has a yearling colt by Racetree sire Greenwood Lake and she foaled a sister to the Moonee Valley winner on September 26.

Hotel Grand’s breakthrough came a day after his year older half-brother Outback Prince sired his first winner.

Outback Prince is based at Clear Mountain Fairview Stud and his filly Hallowed Pearl also won second-up at Rockhampton on Thursday.

Hotel Grand (Grand Lodge) stands for a $13,200 fee.   Outback Prince (Desert Prince) is priced at $11,000.
