Racetree stallion Greenwood Lake dominated the $150,000 QTIS 600 2YO Plate at Townsville on Thursday. His Mackay based filly Massuri scored a three-quarter length victory over local Greenwood Lake gelding He’s So Tempting.
Massuri (2f Greenwood Lake – Russami by Brief Truce) stormed down the outside to earn a big pay-day for trainer Stuart Kendrick. “This is like winning a Group race in Sydney,” Kendrick beamed. “She only cost us $5,500 at the Magic Millions last year.”
Greenwood Lake (Meadowlake) stands at Racetree for $8,800 service fee. He is a three-quarter brother to Success Express and was a G1 winner of the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park.
“I couldn’t make it to last year’s sale – I was stuck in Mackay with the cyclone,” Kendrick recalled. “Paul Maguire rang and said he had found a nice Greenwood Lake filly. I already had one by him in the stable that had shown ability so Paul went ahead and bought her.”
Massuri is the second winner of a half sister to G3 Eagle Farm sprinter Hot to Race. Her dam Russami has a yearling filly by Hotel Grand and she was covered by Exceedingly Good in the spring.
Local hope He’s So Tempting was being hailed the winner until Massuri motored home. He had won the Pallarenda Stakes at Cluden Park in October and looks another bargain after selling for $14,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Sale.
He’s So Tempting (2g Greenwood Lake – So Tempted by Jeune) is a half-brother to G1 Greyville Thekwini Stakes winner Happy Archer (Dubawi) and Listed Gold Coast Bracelet winner Femina Fashion (Shamardal).
The 2011 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale will be held at the Gold Coast on April 17 and 18. “I’ll be there – that’s for sure,” Kendrick said. “The bonus money is unbelievable.”
