Robbie Griffiths loves sending out Super VOBIS winners from his stables at Cranbourne.
Griffiths was Super VOBIS Trainer of the Year in 2012-13 and his latest bonus arrived when Native Land won the Captains Lodge Plate (1400m) at Sale on Friday.
Native Land (3f War Pass – Fuss by At Talaq) was bred by Gerry Ryan’s Limerick Lane Thoroughbreds and she collared front-runner That’s Freedom (Statue Of Liberty) in the last stride to win by a nose.
The runner-up was bred by Nick Psaltis and he is also Super VOBIS qualified.
Native Land is owned by leading bloodstock agent Peter Ford along with Dean Hanan, Michael Briffa, Tony Colquhoun, Peter Jenkins, Mick Ryan and Charles White.
Ford bought the winner’s dam Fuss for $15,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National Sale. She was carrying Native Land and the mare’s value has continued to rise with the fortunes of her improving stayer Backbone.
The Mossman gelding won the LR Galilee Series Final at Mornington last year and he defeated Irish import Ruscello last time out at Caulfield on October 16.
Ford and Hanan bred an Any Given Sunday colt from Fuss last year and the mare was then covered by fellow Darley sire Street Boss.
A VOBIS Gold bonus went begging when By The Grace won on debut at Kyneton last Wednesday. The God’s Own filly claimed a Super VOBIS bonus but she wasn’t paid up for the VOBIS Gold scheme and her connections missed out on an extra $14,000!
