Wootton Bassett will be the first son of NZ shuttler Iffraaj to stand at stud after it was announced the Group 1 winning colt has run his last race.

Wootton Bassett (3c Iffraaj – Balladonia by Primo Dominie) won the 2010 Doncaster Premier Yearling Stakes and Weatherbys 2YO Stakes before claiming the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp.

He was unbeaten in five starts as a two-year-old but failed to recapture that form this year.  The Richard Fahey trained colt raced solely at Group 1 level this season with a best-placed fifth in the French 2000 Guineas.

“Things just haven’t worked out this year,” Fahey said.  “He’s had a few little problems but in general he’s been disappointing.  There’s been interest from studs but nothing concrete has been decided as yet.”

Iffraaj (Zafonic) is from a half-sister to Cape Cross was a G2 winner at Goodwood and York.  He stands at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland and shuttles to Haunui Farm in New Zealand.  

Wootton Bassett headed his record-breaking first crop that included 38 individual juvenile winners in 2010.  His first crop individual winner tally has risen from 38 to 54 this year.  His latest winner Outlaw Torn broke through at Kempton on September 12.

Iffraaj made a particularly strong start with his first southern crop of yearlings at the 2011 NZ Bloodstock National yearling sale.  

His 10 Premier Sale lots averaged $208,500 with a high of $540,000 paid by Mark Kavanagh for the half-brother to G1 Rosehill Guineas winner Zabrasive.  Kavanagh also paid $425,000 at Karaka for a colt from NZ G3 winner Foxy Blonde
