Guest repays faith in Perth Cup

Ascot trainer Shane Edwards was rewarded for his faith in Guest Wing when the gelding scored a determined victory in the G2 Perth Cup (2400m) on Saturday.

Guest Wing (4g Right Wing – Lacienne by Metal Storm) did best after duelling with 2009 Perth Cup winner Guyno (O’Reilly) to score by a neck in the $400,000 event.  Grey mare Simply Adorable (Blackfriars) gave a great sight in the straight to finish third.

Edwards trains the Cup winner for Lex Piper and Richie Green and considers himself lucky to still have the gelding at his Ascot stables.  “Both owners told me to sell him but I talked them out of it and here we are today,” Edwards recalled in the enclosure.  “He has really developed this time in and you can’t fault his form.”

Guest Wing hasn’t been out of a place in seven starts this season.  He went into the Cup on the back of a close second to Western Jewel in the Listed ATA Hcp at Ascot on December 22.

It was a stakes first for Sadler’s Wells line sire Right Wing.  He is a son of In The Wings and was trained by John Dunlop to win 11 races up to 1800m including the G3 Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket and G3 Prix Andre Baboin at Bordeaux.

Right Wing (Ire) stood at Mungrup Stud for six season until 2007 when his fertility fell to 66%.  He got the Cup winner from Lacienne who is a half-sister to the Metal Storm stakes winners Kalatiara (G2 WA Guineas) and Kentiara (LR Detonator Stakes).

Lex Piper raced both fillies and he sent Kalatiara off-shore to win the G3 Royal Heroine Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Lacienne has a 2yo filly by Due Sasso plus a yearling filly and a filly at foot by Danehill Express.  The yearling has been catalogued as Lot 454 for the 2011 Perth Magic Millions.  She is being prepped by Remba Park as agent for Mungrup Stud.
