Hallowell King wins Belgravia Stakes

Craig Thompson has experienced a roller-coaster ride with his filly Hallowell Belle this season.

The Perth based owner has invested millions in Mt Hallowell Stud and he received another dividend when quality colt King Saul easily won the LR Belgravia Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.

Hallowell Belle (Starcraft) has only won once in 9 starts but has been runner-up in the G1 MRC Blue Diamond, LR MVRC Crockett Stakes, G2 VRC Danehill Stakes, G3 MRC 1000 Guineas Prelude and G1 ATC Flight Stakes.

King Saul (3c Flying Pegasus – Zenda  by Zabeel) was sent out at $5 first-up after an impressive city win during his first preparation in April.  He was able to race clear late for an almost arrogant win over Flying Affair.

“He’s quite a casual horse,” trainer Trevor Andrews said.  “He copped a bump at the furlong but recovered for a soft win.”

Andrews is well pleased with the Flying Pegasus horses in his yard and was delighted that King Saul was able to become the first stakes winner for the Touchstone Farm stallion.

“The Flying Pegs showed something early but I think they will show more as three-year-olds,” Andrews said.  “A mile and further is King Saul’s go.  He’s out of a Zabeel mare and has got a really relaxed attitude.

“There’s plenty of upside for King Saul with the Fairetha Stakes and WA Guineas coming up.”

King Saul is a graduate of Namerik Thoroughbreds and was purchased by Mount Hallowell Stud for $120,000 at last year’s Perth Magic Millions yearling sale.  His dam is a half sister to the NZ based stakes winners Pins ‘n’ Needles and Coup Fieldes.
