Former Australian shuttler Dehere has died at the Turkish National Stud. The 23 year-old succumbed to a heart attack.
Dehere claimed the 1993 USA Eclipse 2YO Award after sweeping the G2 Saratoga Special, G3 Sanford Stakes and G1 Hopeful Stakes. He added the G1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park but never figured in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile won by Brocco at Santa Anita.
He resumed to win the G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park over eventual Kentucky Derby winner Go for Gin, however, his career came to an abrupt close when he fractured a cannon-bone after just nine starts.
Dehere (Deputy Minister) retired to Coolmore’s USA base at Ashford Stud in 1995 but was sold to stand in Japan four years later. He returned to Ashford in 2006 and was a regular shuttler to Australia until 2009 when he was sold to the Turkish National Stud in a deal that also included Lion Heart and Powerscourt.
His 77 stakes winners included the Australian Group 1 winners Belle Du Jour, Defier. Bollinger, Dear Demi, Invest and Pear Tart while his best Kentucky-bred galloper was champion filly Take Charge Lady.
