Hearts are trumps at Toowoomba

The value of buying from the monthly Magic Millions sales on the Gold Coast was highlighted again when Glow Heart beat his older rivals in the Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich on Saturday.

Toowoomba trainer Ross Coveney and his wife Jan went to last year’s November Monthly Sale in search of a bargain and they certainly found one for just $1,800.

Glow Heart (3g Show a Heart – Southern Wave by Stark South) is from a sister to G1 Auckland Cup winner Bodie and the Ipswich victory was his fourth in 14 starts.

Coveney has just five horses in work at Toowoomba and rents out the rest of his boxes.  “I bought him because I just liked his breeding and he was cheap,” Coveney said.  “I like cheap horses.”

Coveney, 57, is a former central Queensland grazier and only started training four years ago.  “I was confident Glow Heart could win.  He’s been a bit unlucky a few times.”

Glow Heart was bred by Goldstar Thoroughbreds and was initially sold by Newhaven Park for $17,500 at the 2009 Magic Million Summer yearling sale.  He changed hands again for $1,800 before facing the starter.

His dam Southern Wave has an unraced 2yo colt named Avonova (Break the Vault) in work with James Rundle at Rockhampton.
