Hollywoodboulevard completed a southern hemisphere stakes double for sire sensation Street Cry at Turffontein on Saturday. The South African filly landed her second victory at Group 3 level when taking out the Three Troikas Stakes.
Earlier on Saturday, River’s Lane became Street Cry’s latest stakes winner in the Listed Birthday Cup (1800m) at Morphettville.
Hollywoodboulevard (3f Street Cry – Soneria by Filante) has been a magnificent money-spinner for connections having won both the R1.5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup and the G3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein in November.
She showed potential at two after coasting home by seven lengths on debut at Vaal. The Australian bred filly was sold by Bridgeview Stud for $6,000 as a foal at the 2008 Magic Millions National weanling sale.
Hollywoodboulevard was entered for the 2009 South African Ready To Run 2YO Sale by Summerhill Stud and trainer Charles Laird signed the sale sheet on behalf of his major client Marcus Jooste for R900,000.
Hollywoodboulevard had plenty of work to do at the business end on Saturday but she responded when Guillermo Figueroa went for home along the inside. She moved alongside Without Malice and wore her down by half a length.
The Street Cry filly looks the one to beat in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas and local reports suggest Laird has a bit to work on leading up to the Triple Tiara which will be run at level weights.
Hollywoodboulevard was conceding 3kg and more to her rivals in the Three Troikas. She can emerge from Jo’burg to play a part on the national stage in the months ahead.
River’s Lane became Street Cry’s 43rd individual stakes winner in Adelaide on Saturday. He established an unassailable lead at the top of the straight and was still two lengths clear at the finish. He was bred by Jason Carvill and is from a sister to the G3 winner Cosmic Strike.
Trainer David Balfour has always had a high opinion of the Birthday Cup winner who is now in contention for next month’s Adelaide Cup. Earlier in his career, the gelding contested the Caulfield Guineas and he also ran third to Pluralism in the 2009 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic.
River’s Lane (4g Street Cry – Star Made by Made Of Gold) was a $21,000 purchase from the 2008 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale and has earned almost $250,000 with that figure set to rise over the coming weeks.
Street Cry’s progeny have been going from strength to strength with his outstanding daughter Zenyatta – due to be covered by fellow Darley stallion Bernardini this year – recently awarded one of the highest honours in racing, Eclipse Horse Of The Year.
Street Cry’s next southern hemisphere-bred progeny will be available at this year’s weanling sales after a three-year hiatus.
