Inaflury foals first winner at Doomben

Group 1 winning mare Inaflury was represented by her first winner when Redesign won the Coca-Cola Amatil Plate (1650m) at Doomben on Wednesday.

Inaflury (Zabeel) was all class at the races but her career was clouded by controversy.  She was a G1 winner of the One Thousand Guineas and Edward Manifold Stakes at three and followed up with G2 victories in the J J Liston Stakes and Feehan Stakes as a four year-old.

But it was in defeat that Inaflury captured most headlines.   She started equal favourite in the 2001 Caulfield Cup but was back near the rear of the 18 horse before jockey Jim Cassidy took off at the half-mile.

She got to the front alright, however, there was no juice left in the tank when Ethereal made a winning move in the straight.  Owner Danny Rose blew up and threatening to quite racing.  In time, he cooled down and is still involved in the industry running Cherokee Rose Stud in Victoria.

Nevertheless, he sold Inaflury to Lloyd Willams but bad luck has dogged her career at stud.  She has missed or slipped five times in nine years to sires like Flying Spur, Grand Lodge, Viscount, Testa Rossa and Redoute’s Choice.

Williams bred her to Commands in 2003 and the result was Redesign.  She is raced by Hoss and Gillian Heinrich and made a belated debut a day shy of her fifth birthday on July 30.

Redesign was placed in her first two starts at the Gold Coast and Eagle Farm before scoring a front-running victory at Doomben on Wednesday.

Inaflury had changed hands in 2005 when Williams sold her to Gerry Harvey for $425,000 at the 2005 Magic Millions National Sale.  The following year Harvey put her to Beautiful Crown and the result was a filly now named Inabeauti.  She is a new-season three year-old and is in work with Tony Noonan at Mornington.

Inaflury is based at Baramul Stud and is empty after missing to Redoute’s Choice last December.  She will be bred back to Arrowfield’s champion sire this season.
