Jet Spur has taken the early lead in the Australian first-season sire’s premiership for winners following a weekend double in Queensland. The Glenlogan Park Stud freshman has now sired four winners after Power Of Ed scored at the Gold Coast on Saturday and Jenelle did likewise at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
Jet Spur (Flying Spur) was paying $6 when betting opened but has now firmed into a $2.60 favourite ahead of Snitzel ($3) and Stratum ($3.60) with www.sportingbet.com.au.
Power Of Ed (2c Jet Spur – Precious Epic by Iglesia) is the latest winner for Gold Coast trainer Helen Page. Her stable has been on fire in recent times and she elected to let the colt debut at his home track instead of going to Doomben where he had drawn poorly.
Page rates the youngster very highly and that was confirmed when he finished strongly under Ric McMahon to win the MM Packages Book Now Hcp (900m) by two lengths running away.
Jet Spur upgraded his dam Precious Epic who only won a Ballina maiden in 16 starts. She is a half-sister to Perth stakes performer Truckin Tobie (Greenlander) and the dam of Brisbane flyer Power of George (Falvelon). Power Of Ed was a $55,000 buy at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale from the Epic Farm draft.
Jenelle (2f Jet Spur – Crackle Dash by Hennessy) was just as impressive winning the Curran Group Maiden (1000m) 24 hours later. The Bryan Guy trained filly was also nominated for Doomben’s Saturday meeting but was reserved for the Sunny Coast.
Janelle settled behind the pace and then overhauled the leaders in the straight. Stathi Katsidis pinched a winning break and held off the fast finishing Funky Lady to win by a neck.
Janelle was a $60,000 purchase from Oakwood Farm at the 2009 Millions QTIS 600 yearling sale. Her dam Crackle Dash retired a maiden after 10 starts in Queensland. She is a half-sister to Ain’t Here (Dehere) who was a 2yo winner at Flemington before being sold off-shore to win Group races in Hong Kong.
Jet Spur was a G2 winner of the Dodo Sprint at Caulfield and the G3 L’Oreal Paris Plate at Flemington. He is by Champion sire Flying Spur out of the G3 winning mare Verocative (Bletchingly) who hails from the family of Zeditave.
Jet Spur sired his first winner when the Liam Birchley trained Slice And Dice won at Eagle Farm on November 14. His second winner arrived on December 10 when True Blue Angel motored home to win at Ipswich.
