Jolie’s Shinju ran out of her skin when third to top-liners Whobegotyou and Mic Mac in the G2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
The Singapore mare will jump from 1600m to 2040m in the Cox Plate next month and whether she can handle the extra distance will probably be influenced more by her racing pattern than her pedigree.
Jolie’s Shinju (5m Jolie’s Halo – Endearing Quality by Danzig) scored an all-the-way win in her last appearance at Kranji when spacing the G1 Singapore Derby field by five lengths over 2000m.
Her sire Jolie’s Halo (Halo) was a G1 winner of the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park and the Phillip H. Iselin Handicap at Monmouth Park. He equalled Spend a Buck’s track record in the latter running 1:46.80s for 1800m. That mark has stood the test of time since 1992 and even survived champion Rachel Alexandra who won the Haskell Invitational over 1800m at Monmouth last month in 1:47.21s.
In 1993, Jolie’s Halo entered stud at Bridlewood Stud in Florida and was relocated to East Stud in Japan three years later. He died following a paddock accident at the Hokkaido stud in June 2005 aged 18.
Multiple G1 winner Hal’s Hope was his best performer in the United Stakes winning the G1 Florida Derby and Gulfstream Park Hcp for veteran owner-trainer Harold Rose. His chief earner in Japan was Super Nakayama who five races including the G3 The Garnet.
Jolie’s Shinju (Jpn) has surpassed both those gallopers with the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam third-place purse sending her bank past $1.32 million.
Jolie’s Shinju is trained by Hideyuki Takaoka and owned by the Hippocrates Stable. She was purchased by Dr Tan Kai Chah at the 2006 Hokkaido Autumn Sale for 3.15 million yen (AUD 35,610).
Her dam Endearing Quality (Danzig) is an unraced sister to Qualify who was a G1 winner of the Del Mar Futurity. He was also runner-up in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Second-dam So Endearing (Raise a Native) is a winning three-quarter-sister to the dam of former Australian shuttler Belong To Me.
The jury is still out on Jolie’s Shinju’s ability to run the Cox Plate distance right out but sportingbet.com.au were impressed with her first-up effort on Saturday. They have lifted her to the third line of betting at $11 behind Whobegotyou ($3.30) and El Segundo ($8.50).
