Highly-touted three year-old Scales of Justice has returned to racing with an impressive win at Ascot despite doing a lot wrong in transit.

Starting an odds-on favourite, the lightly-raced gelding scored by a length in the Perth Racing Young Membership Plate (1100m) on Xmas Eve.  He jumped well for jockey Paul Harvey but began to over-race and throw his head around with the muddling pace up front.

Harvey elected to let him slide three wide and in a matter of strides he put the race beyond doubt to win with plenty in reserve.

“Scales of Justice might be better off in front in future,” trainer Lindsey Smith said.  “He’s a big striding horse and was reefing off heels before Paul let him loose.  I’ve liked him from Day 1 and we will take him through the classes.

“He will win a good race along the line but not unless he learns to be more tractable.”

Scales of Justice (3g Not A Single Doubt – Beymatilla by Umatilla) had won by three lengths on debut at Northam in July and then finished second to stakes winning fillies Chantski and Perfect Reflection at Belmont.

There looks to be plenty more cheques in store for the gelding who was an $180,000 yearling purchase at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.  Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) agent Craig Rounsefell bought him for Perth clients Chris Wells and Bill Andrews.

Wells raced speedy filly You Will Be Queen with Smith for wins at Ascot (2) and Pinjarra (2).

Three Sunspeed vendors have nominated Not A Single Doubt fillies for the Perth Magic Millions in February – Lot 164 ex Sweet Lorraine (Gervase Park), Lot 217 ex Amelia’s Secret (Amelia Park) and Lot 291 ex Distant Thunder (Alwyn Park).
