Kalahaar revenge in Farnley Stakes

Kalatiara rates as one of the best fillies ever bred at Mungrup Stud and she’s been just as successful in the breeding barn.

Her classy sprinter Kalahaar added more black-type to the family’s pedigree with a sweet victory in the LR Farnley Stakes (1400m) at Belmont Park on Saturday.  He defeated Settle Strada after that gelding had beaten him home in the Bolton Sprint and Belmont Newmarket.

“If ever a horse deserved to win a good race, it’s this bloke,” trainer Steve Wolfe said.  “We been looking at the tail of Settle Strada but he’s been screaming out for 1400 metres.  And Shaun (McGruddy) rode a brilliant race today.”

Kalahaar (5g Choisir – Kalatiara by Metal Storm) will now head to Kalgoorlie for the LR Hannan’s Handicap (1400m) on Wednesday, September 18.

Kalatiara (pictured) scored a G2 victory in the 2000 WA Guineas for owner-breeders Lex and Shirley Piper.  She later transferred to North America to win the G3 Royal Heroine Stakes at Hollywood Park.

They raced her younger sister Kentiara to Listed victories the Detonator Stakes and La Trice Classic.  Another sister Lacienne foaled the Piper’s G2 Perth Cup winner Guest Wing (Right Wing).

Kalatiara is also the dam of Slick Shifter (Flying Spur) who won a Pinjarra 3yo Maiden in June.  The mare has a 2yo filly by Medaglia d’Oro named Tiara Mak.

Kalahaar is the 54th stakes winner for Coolmore Stud stallion Choisir and he has been a marvellous money-spinner for the Pipers and Graham Daws winning 7 times from 17 starts for earnings of $328,000.
