Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet died after a paddock accident at Penn Ridge Farm in Pennsylvania on Monday.  The 15-year-old son of Quiet American fell and broke five vertebrae in his withers.

Real Quiet and Victory Gallop staged a personal duel in the 1998 classics.  Real Quiet defeated his arch rival in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes but was denied the Triple Crown by a nose when run down by Victory Gallop in the Belmont Stakes.

Trained throughout his career by Bob Baffert, Real Quiet was also a G1 winner of the Hollywood Futurity at two and the G1 Pimlico Special and G1 Hollywood Gold Cup at four.  He earned $3.27 million.

Real Quiet entered stud at Vinery Kentucky in 2000 and later stood at Taylor Made Stallions, Regal Heir Farm, Pin Oak Lane Farm and Penn Ridge.

Real Quiet has sired 15 stakes winners including Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Midnight Lute.  He shuttled to Vinery Australia but didn’t make any impact with his southern hemisphere bred runners.  His best performers down here were the Listed winners Lady Natasha (WATC Lindsay Rosenthal St), Really Flying (Scone Dark Jewel Classic) and Tommifrancs (VRC Bagot Handicap).
