Knight high-class winner at Northam

The Peters Investments conveyer belt of high-class homebreds delivered its latest black-type prospect when Western Knight blew away a short-course field in the Pegasus Sweetmax Maiden (985m) on Thursday.

Bred to get over much further than a minimum trip first-up from a spell, Western Knight didn’t get mobile until the final furlong at Northam but that’s all he needed to pick them up and put them to bed.  He had finished midfield on debut at Pinjarra in April before transferring to Adam Durrant.

“That was a successful beginning to an exciting racing career by the very well-related four-year-old,” Durrant Racing reported.  “It also gave an insight into what is to come from our yard this season.”

The Iffraaj gelding was bred by Peters Investments and is the fifth winner from Western Jewel (G2 Perth Cup).  Among them is his older full-brother Western Empire (G1 Railway Stakes) and their dam has another 2yo full-brother named Western Power.

Western Knight launched the first of many wins less than a week after Peters Investments won the 2021-22 WA Broodmare of the Year Award with Broadway Belle (Redoute’s Choice).  She had also won the Broodmare Award in 2019-20 and they both came courtesy of her Group 1 star Regal Power (Pierro).

Regal Power won the 2019 Railway Stakes and 2021 Kingston Town Classic and he was named 2021-22 WA Racehorse of the Year at the Westin Hotel last Saturday evening

TBWA Clarification:  In a prior review of the WA Thoroughbred Racing Awards ceremony, it was reported Broadway Belle (Peters Investments) and Stormy Nova (Oakland Park) had tied for the 2021-22 WA Broodmare of the Year Award.

Both mares finished on equal points, however, Oakland Park owner Neville Duncan respectfully declined to share the Award.  He pointed out Bob Peters owned Stormy Nova in 2016 when she foaled Superstorm (Sebring) who went on to win the G1 Cantala Stakes at Flemington last October sporting the cerise and white silks.

Peters Investments later sold Stormy Nova to Oakland Park for $45,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
