Trainer Doug Harrison reckons Tudor’s black-type breakthrough in the LR Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) could be the catalyst for a Group 1 assignment in the Goodwood Hcp.
Tudor was runner-up in stakes races at Moonee Valley and Morphettville before finishing midfield in last year’s feature sprint in Adelaide. “I might back him up in the Australia Day Stakes at Moonee Valley next weekend before we make a decision about the Goodwood,” Harrison said after the gelding’s front-running victory at Flemington. “All he wants is just a little bit of luck.”
A change of gear was also instrumental in his return to form on Saturday – Harrison took the advice of jockey Darren Gauci and fitted blinkers for the Chester Manifold. “He’s a lovely horse but over-raced here last time,” the Cranbourne trainer explained. “And he is a delight to train even though he’s still a stallion.”
Tudor (4h Strategic – Skidoodle by Encosta de Lago) is a homebred for Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm after being withdrawn from the Magic Millions Adelaide and National Yearling Sales in 2013. His dam was a Yarra Glen winner for Lauriston’s O’Brien family and they sold her Helmet colt for $170,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Foal Sale.
Skidoodle has a Denman colt on the ground and is in foal to Darley Victoria sire Brazen Beau.
Alcobro (Bianconi) completed an interstate double for Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm in the Harcourts Vennmillar Hcp (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday. It followed a four-timer last weekend with winning graduates Godavari, Chiavari, The Seductress and Sette Bello.
The Corinella nursery averaged $170,000 for its 5 yearlings at the Gold Coast Magic Millions last week and there are another 9 lots catalogued for the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.
