Liberty reigns in Eureka Stockade

Green Patina gave Statue Of Liberty a second feature win in as many years at Ballarat’s stand-alone meeting on Saturday.

The Sun Stud stallion sired Claro el Banco to claim the 2015 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic and he doubled up with Green Patina in the VOBIS Gold Eureka Stockade.

Saturday’s winner is a homebred for Stawell trainer Terry O’Sullivan and started at $18 despite a last-start maiden victory at Horsham.  She got the better of a final furlong fight with VOBIS Gold Ingot winner Valliano (Equiano) to score by a half head at the end of 1400m.

Green Patina (3f Statue Of Liberty – Ladies In Luck by Perugino) collected $76,000 in prizemoney and VOBIS bonuses after powering home on a leader-biased circuit.  “I was a little bit worried but we weren’t going to change her pattern of racing,” O’Sullivan explained.  “I just wanted her to learn to relax and run home, which she did.

“She did a good job at Horsham.  It’s pretty hard coming from a long way back there.  I will probably take her to town and the further she goes the better.”

Her dam Ladies In Luck was a marvellous money-spinner for O’Sullivan.  Purchased for just $8,000 from Cherokee Rose Stud owner Danny Rose at Oaklands, she won 5 races up to 2600m in Melbourne and was also a close second in the LR Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington.

Green Patina is the mare’s second winner and the O’Sullivans have her yearling colt by top sire Written Tycoon.

Statue Of Liberty (Storm Cat) yearlings sold up to $250,000 at the 2016 majors and he stands for an $8,800 (inc gst) fee at Sun Stud.
