Lift-off for Captain Rio in New Zealand

Reasis caused a $24 upset in the first juvenile event of the season in Australasia on Saturday.  Her sire Captain Rio shuttles to Gerry Harvey’s Westbury Stud for a $9,000 (plus gst) service fee.

Reais (2f Captain Rio – Heather Mac by Keeper) raced on the pace to score by two lengths in the 92.8 More FM Hcp (800m) at Wanganui.

Reais is trained by part-owner and breeder Rachael Frost at Otaki.  The bay filly clocked 47.55s to defeat Hollywood Angel (Dehere) and Killa Question (Any Suggestion).

Frost bought her dam Heather Mac for a mere $2,400 from The Oaks Stud at a 2007 NZB Mare Sale.  The mare’s three year-old is the Robert Smerdon trained gelding Captain Sunshine (Handsome Ransom).  He hasn’t faced the starter but did win a Cranbourne trial in May.

Heather Mac’s latest foal is a yearling filly by Westbury Stud shuttler Librettist.

Captain Rio (Pivotal) is the sire of 2010 G1 Victorian Oaks winner Brazilian Pulse, however, the Mike Moroney trained mare is at the crossroads after failing badly at her first two runs back this season.

Captain Rio stands alongside Swiss Ace (Secret Savings), Red Giant (Giant’s Causeway), Cecconi (Encosta de Lago), Faltaat (Mr Prospector), Librettist (Danzig) and Postponed (Summer Squall).
