Lightning kills My Atacanta

Mick’s Tippin ran out a surprise winner of the Nor-West Jockey Club Hcp (1800m) at Roebourne on Saturday – less than a week after the death of his sire My Atacanta.

The 14yo stallion was struck by lightning during a storm in Serpentine.

My Atacanta (Ire) was owned by Redwood Park’s Alan Macalister and had been in service at nearby Rosalee Park alongside Vital Equine (Ire) and the recently-retired Planet Five (USA).

Sparingly used since retiring to stud, he has sired the winners of 43 races and $1.27 million in prizemoney led by multiple city winners Delicate Miss, Brisanto, My Laina, Dawn Mission and My Demi.

Mick’s Tippin (6g My Atacanta – Our Calendar Girl by Speed Week) is part-owned and trained by Krista Pike and he had been around the traps winning at Pinjarra, Collie and Mingenew before heading to the Pilbara.

My Atacanta (Traditionally) won the Celebration Hcp (1600m) at Listowel in Ireland before arriving out here to complete a hat-trick for Macalister and trainer Vaughn Sigley at Belmont.
